Want to look after your lawn between maintenance visits but don’t know where to start? No need to be daunted, below are a few simple tips which will help improve your lawn and keep your grass happier and greener.

Raking

Depending on the size of lawn you have, lightly raking the grass before cutting will help untangle any grass which may be lying flat or matted.

This will help keep the lawn at a more uniform height and create a healthier lawn allowing better penetration of nutrients and water into your lawn. Mowing in different directions will also help combat against the grass lying flat in one direction.

Raking is best done from spring until autumn, at least once a month when the grass has good strong growth.

Watering

Water is essential for the lawns long term health. Like all other garden plants for your lawn to remain healthy and green it requires water to uptake nutrients to keep the plant growing and alive. Water first thing in the morning or late evening, this will allow the grass to make the most of the water applied.

A fully grassed lawn with healthy deep roots will be more durable than you may realise compared to a patchy lawn.

If the grass starts to turn a bluey, black colour and doesn’t spring back up when walking on it, this is a sign it needs water urgently before it goes yellow and dies back. Avoid cutting and walking on your lawn until it has recovered.

Mowing

The most common maintenance, but when done incorrectly can cause more problems than you think.

Keep your mower blade sharp. The health of the plant is heavily impacted by cutting, a blunt mower blade will tear the leaves leaving a brown coloured haze and an opportunity for disease to infect the grass.

Collect your clippings if you can and mow regularly, as a rule of thumb do not take more than a third off in one cut.

Don’t cut too short, around 25-30mm is perfect as this keeps the grass neat and tidy but most importantly this gives the grass a comfortable life. The shorter you go the quicker grass will stress in hot periods.

Raking removes dying leaves from the lawn keeping the lawn healthy and clean.

The lawn is showing the first signs of drought stress in the forefront of this picture. The turf is beginning to turn a black/blue colour and is lying flat. If no water is applied the grass will die and turn yellow.

Lawn mowed short, before.

Mowing height slightly longer, two weeks after.
